How to Make Your Hair Extensions Last Longer: A Care Guide
Quality hair extensions are an investment in your hair, your confidence, and honestly, your time. I only use the highest quality hair for every install I do, because that quality is what allows extensions to hold up beautifully over time instead of looking dull or tangled within weeks. But even the best hair needs the right care. Here’s how to protect that investment and keep your hair looking silky, full, and gorgeous for as long as possible.
Use the Right Products
Not all shampoos and conditioners are extension-friendly. Sulfates and heavy oils can break down bonds and tape adhesive faster than you’d expect. Look for sulfate-free, lightweight formulas, and always apply conditioner from mid-shaft to ends never directly at the root or bond, where it can loosen things prematurely.
Brush Gently, Brush Often
A soft-bristle or loop brush designed for extensions is a must. Start brushing from the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling on the bonds. I recommend brushing at least once or twice a day, even on days you don’t wash your hair it keeps strands from tangling or matting near the roots.
Be Mindful at Bedtime
Sleeping with wet extensions is one of the fastest ways to create tangles and stress on the bonds. Try to let your hair air-dry (or blow it dry) before bed, and consider a loose braid or a silk pillowcase to reduce friction overnight.
Watch the Heat
Extensions can absolutely handle styling tools, but always use a heat protectant first, and try to keep direct heat away from the bonds or tape area. Too much heat too close to the attachment point can weaken it over time.
Skip the Daily Ponytail (At Least at the Root)
Constant tension in the same spot, like a tight ponytail or bun right at the bonds, can cause premature slipping. Mix up your styles, and when you do pull your hair back, keep it looser near the root.
Don’t Skip Your Maintenance Appointments
This is the big one. Extensions move as your natural hair grows, and regular maintenance visits (typically every 6-8 weeks depending on your method) keep everything positioned correctly and looking its best. Skipping these appointments is the number one reason extensions start to look less natural or become uncomfortable.
The Bottom Line
Great extensions are “set it and forget it” but with the right routine, and hair quality you can trust from the start, they really can look and feel like your own hair, day after day. With over 30 years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference proper care makes, and I’m always happy to walk clients through a routine that fits their specific extensions. It’s part of why so many of my clients stick with me year after year once we find the right routine together, maintaining beautiful hair becomes second nature. If it’s time for a maintenance visit, or you have questions about your specific extension type, reach out and I’ll get you taken care of.
