Wedding Hair Timeline: When to Book Your Trial and Big Day Appointment

Of all the details on a wedding checklist, hair is one that brides sometimes leave until the last minute – and then panic a little when they realize how much planning actually goes into getting it right. With over 30 years of experience, including countless wedding days, here’s the timeline I recommend so your big day hair goes exactly as planned.

9-12 Months Out: Start Browsing, Don’t Book Yet

This is the daydreaming phase. Save photos of styles you love, think about whether you’re picturing soft waves, a sleek updo, or something with extensions for extra length and volume. No need to commit yet – just start gathering inspiration.

6-8 Months Out: Book Your Stylist

Wedding season books up fast, especially on popular dates. Once your venue and date are locked in, reach out to reserve your spot. This is also a great time to ask any early questions about extensions, if you’re considering adding length or fullness for your big day look.

3-4 Months Out: Schedule Your Trial

Your hair trial is where all the magic gets figured out before the pressure of the actual day. I recommend booking this a few months out – close enough that your hair color and length will be close to what they’ll be on the wedding day, but with enough time to make adjustments if needed.

Bring to your trial: – Your veil or hair accessories (if you have them) – Photos of styles you’re drawn to – A photo of your dress neckline, if possible

6-8 Weeks Out: Any Final Color or Cut Touch-Ups

If you’re doing a color refresh, a trim, or adding extensions for the wedding, this is the window to get it done – close enough to the date that it’s fresh, but with enough buffer to make any small adjustments before the big day.

1-2 Weeks Out: Final Trial (If Needed)

If your trial left you wanting a small tweak, or if you added extensions or changed your color afterward, a quick follow-up close to the date ensures everything is dialed in.

Wedding Day

Relax – this is the fun part. By this point, we already know exactly what we’re doing, how long it will take, and what products and pins will hold everything perfectly through dancing, tears of joy, and every photo.

A Few Extra Tips

• If you’re getting extensions for extra length or volume, plan for that install about 1-2 weeks before the wedding, not the day before. I only work with the highest quality hair, so it blends seamlessly and photographs beautifully.
• Always do a trial with your hair in the same state it’ll be in on the wedding day (freshly washed vs. day-two hair, for example) since that affects how a style holds.
• Communicate your full-day timeline (ceremony, photos, reception) so your stylist can make sure your hair holds up from “I do” through the last dance.
